Society of St Vincent de Paul
Who we are:
We meet fortnightly on Mondays at 7.15pm. We currently have 5 members Jean, Barbara, Sonia, Michael and Regina. We start and end our meetings with prayers and spiritual readings. There are regular events to keep us in touch with other SVP members in Edinburgh, such as Group Council Meetings, Reflection days and an Annual Mass.
What we do:
We see people of any age. Sometimes we see people in crisis, for example, people who have no income because their benefits have been stopped or they have just been released from prison. We see single people and families, people with physical or mental illness. We see some people long term. We also help with feeding the homeless in winter (Bethany Care Shelter). We usually do our visiting in pairs. Sometimes we see people in the Church House, sometimes at their home. We get a lot of joy from our work and in helping people to move on from difficult situations. We are able to give financial help to some from the weekly SVDP collections after Sunday Mass.
We often get referrals from Fr Peter and other sources such as people who are aware of someone with difficulties needing support, self referrals from people who know about the SSVP and occasionally from other conferences and Headquarters in Glasgow. St Andrews and Edinburgh also has a Caravan Scheme whereby people who would not otherwise have a holiday, can go to Seton Sands or Fife for a caravan holiday. Sacred Heart SVP has often used this scheme.
Joining the SVP
If you are interested in joining the Sacred Heart SVP you should initially approach Fr Peter Scally, Parish Priest or Mr Andrew Cassidy, Pastoral Assistant. You would also be able to talk to us about our work and would not be asked to commit more time than you are able.
Getting help from the SVP
If you would like help from the SVP or for members of the SVP to visit you, please contact us through Fr Peter or Mr Andrew Cassidy.
Our hope is to build up the membership of our Sacred Heart SVP Conference to enable us to help more people. In future, we might set up a youth branch with the help of the SSVP Youth Development Officer. The SSVP has a number of youth branches in universities, schools and parishes.
