The Parish of Lauriston
The Roman Catholic Parish of Lauriston was established in 1859 when Bishop Gillis entrusted pastoral care of the west end of Edinburgh Old Town to the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). A temporary chapel in Hunter’s Close in the Grassmarket became the parish school when the parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Lauriston Street was opened on 8 July 1860.
Schools and University
St Thomas of Aquin’s RC High School is situated on Chalmers Road within the parish and caters for some 800 pupils ages 12 to 18 (Years S1 to S6). Younger children in the parish generally go to St Peter’s RC Primary School in Morningside. Part of the University of Edinburgh and much student accommodation is situated in the parish. The University Catholic Chaplaincy is in the care of the Dominicans at George Square.

The parish covers the Tollcross, Lauriston and Grassmarket parts of Edinburgh Old Town, the Meadows and Bruntsfield, and includes the new Quartermile development on the former site of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
