Pastoral Letter from the Bishops of Scotland
The bishops of Scotland have written a pastoral letter drawing attention to proposals for legislation to allow assisted suicide in Scotland.  They ask that you contact your MSP today to make your view known.  Guidance on contacting MSPs is available at rcpolitics.org/assistedsuicide or email office@rcpolitics.org.  Copies of the bishops’ letter are available in the narthex today.

Ecclesiastical Students Fund
Thank you for your generosity to last Sunday’s special collection for the training of priests in this diocese which came to £313.

Latin Mass
Each month, we celebrate a Mass in Latin for those who find this conduicive to their prayer and worship.  The whole Mass is in Latin except for the readings which are in English.  The Latin texts and translations are provided.  The Mass includes some Gregorian chant.  Our next Latin Mass will be at 7pm on Wednesday 8 May – the Vigil of the feast of the Ascension of the Lord, a holiday of obligation.  All welcome.

First Sunday Circle: Divine Grace and Human Free Will
Next Sunday, 5 May, after the evening Mass, Fr Matthew Jarvis op joins us for First Sunday Circle – an opportunity for young adults (age 18-35) to hear about matters of Catholic faith and life in a relaxed social setting with opportunities for Q&A and discussion.  Fr Jarvis will speak on Divine Grace and Human Free Will.  The arguments between Dominicans and Jesuits on this topic in the 16-17th centuries are among the greatest theological controversies of all time.  The Pope had to call an end to hostilities in 1607, insisting that each side could continue teaching their own view as long as they didn’t call the other side heretical!  How do we understand today the relationship of God’s grace and our free will, in the light of Scripture, the Church Fathers and later Tradition?  All welcome, especially heretics.

Choral Concert
The Octet, a student group of singers, including some of our own choral scholars, will be performing a short concert on Saturday 4 May at 6pm in the church.  The programme includes Macmillan O radiant dawn, Dowland Come again, Parsons Ave Maria, and Whitacre Sleep.  All welcome.

Classical Guitar Recital
Classical guitarists Ahmed Dickinson and Eduardo Martin will be performing a recital in the church on Sunday 5 May at 4pm.  A recent review comments, ‘You are left with the sensation of being touched to the core by exquisitely played pieces.’  All welcome.  Tickets £13 online at Citizen Ticket or on the door.

BBC R4 Sunday Worship
A big thank you to everyone who came along to the recording of BBC Radio 4’s Sunday Worship programme last Wednesday.  Your enthusiastic reponses and singing made a big difference to the quality of the programme which reaches a vast audience worldwide.  This is a real opportunity for evangelization and sharing of a Catholic Christian understanding of life.  The programme was broadcast this morning and is available on BBC Sounds.

Christian Life Communty (CLC)
It is some while since we had the information meetings about establishing Christian Life Communities here in the parish.  The young adult CLC is already up and running.  We are now opening two further groups: one that will meet on Mondays and one that will meet on Tuesdays, once a month.  The first meetings of the new groups will be on Tuesday 7 May and Monday 20 May at 7pm in the Ogilvie Room (access through the church).  Please come along to join whichever group best suits.  The sessions will last one hour.  If you did not come to the information meetings and wish to find out more, please email ejc@jesuit.org.uk

Readers
Please remember to check in with the priest in the sacristy a few minutes before Mass whether you are reading at a Sunday or a weekday Mass.  This is very much appreciated and helps reassure the priest that a reader is present and any variations in what is to be read are understood.  Thank you.
